Earth Society
Society is the crossroads between art and design. They converge when faced with the same crucial issues within communities. Today, however, art can no longer withstand isolation, separated from the social, environmental, and political realities that shape our era. “Earth Society” provides a space that is both reflective and speculative, bringing together artists and designers from within and outside the country to reestablish our relationship with nature and community.
The works in “Earth Society” are rooted in context. With a focus on Southeast Asia, this exhibition aims to reflect local, regional, and global conditions regarding the loss of livable space due to environmental factors, such as the climate crisis and land exploitation, as well as socio-political dynamics, including war and genocide. This exhibition is not merely a campaign for a greener Earth. Rather, “Earth Society” is a conceptual framework that seeks to reflect the relationship between humans and the Earth through sustainability, care, and collectivity – not just a vision, but an experimentation.
In the history of art, we have witnessed various intersections between artistic practice, the environment, and communities. The land art movement of the 1960s–70s utilised landscapes as a medium for critique against industrialisation. A more contemporary example is socially engaged art, which emphasises the importance of dialogue and collaboration with communities. Encounters with science are also inevitable; bio art explores the blurred boundaries between the systems of life, science, and ethics. As a current practice, world-building serves as a speculative tool to imagine future eco-social possibilities through creative practices.
In the field of design, the importance of cultural and social approaches was also remarked alongside the technical needs that designers use to understand the diversity of community life, and has now evolved within the field of design anthropology. Exploration of alternative materials – or anything that could be called new materials – marks an important shift in today’s design world. Various other terms (and non-terms) have emerged, and it is time to highlight these practices.
With this spirit in mind, “Earth Society” invites an inclusive cross-disciplinary dialogue: between art and science, climate activism, technology, and local knowledge. With the effort to raise awareness and explore solutions, interaction becomes key in the practice of participating artists and designers. Therefore, this exhibition presents interactive installations, spatial interventions, and community-based projects that extend beyond hotel walls, as well as attempts to redefine the exhibition as an artistic medium. Here, the exhibition is not the end of a process, but the starting point toward meaningful change.
The 15th edition of ICAD marks this shift. Prospective participants from various backgrounds – art, design, science, ecology, architecture, and others – have access to shape the space here. The curatorial team learns alongside diverse individuals and groups who are not only creative but also revive the meaning of collectivity and explore sustainability comprehensively. It is not just about ecological aspects, but also about how we can live in coexistence. Ultimately, the future cannot be imagined separately; it must be built collectively.

Masyarakat adalah titik temu antara seni dan desain. Keduanya bertemu ketika dihadapkan pada isu-isu krusial yang sama di komunitas. Hari ini, seni tidak lagi dapat berdiri sendiri,
terpisah dari realitas sosial, lingkungan, dan politik yang membentuk zaman ini. Earth Society menghadirkan ruang yang reflektif sekaligus spekulatif, mempertemukan seniman
dan desainer dari dalam dan luar negeri untuk membangun kembali hubungan kita dengan alam dan komunitas.
Karya-karya dalam Earth Society berangkat dari konteks. Dengan fokus pada Asia Tenggara, pameran ini mencoba merefleksikan kondisi lokal, regional, dan global terhadap hilangnya ruang hidup yang layak akibat faktor lingkungan seperti krisis iklim dan eksploitasi lahan, serta dinamika sosial-politik seperti perang dan genosida. Pameran ini bukan sekadar kampanye untuk bumi yang lebih hijau. Lebih tepatnya, Earth Society merupakan suatu kerangka konseptual yang mengupayakan pembacaan ulang atas relasi manusia dan bumi, melalui keberlanjutan, kepedulian, dan kolektivitas—lebih dari sekedar visi, melainkan sebuah eksperimentasi.
Dalam sejarah seni, kita telah menyaksikan berbagai titik temu antara praktik artistik, lingkungan, dan komunitas. Gerakan land art pada dekade 1960–70-an menjadikan lanskap sebagai medium kritik terhadap industrialisasi. Sebagai contoh yang lebih kontemporer, praktik seni berbasis sosial menekankan pentingnya dialog dan kolaborasi dengan masyarakat. Persinggungan dengan ilmu pengetahuan pun tak terhindarkan; bio art mengeksplorasi batas-batas kabur antara sistem kehidupan, sains, dan etika. Sebagai praktik yang cukup kini, world-building menjadi sarana spekulatif untuk membayangkan kemungkinan-kemungkinan eko-sosial masa depan melalui praktik kreatif.
Di bidang desain pun mencatat pentingnya pendekatan kultural dan sosial di samping kebutuhan teknis yang digunakan desainer untuk memahami beragamnya kehidupan masyarakat. Eksplorasi terhadap material alternatif—atau apa yang disebut sebagai new materials—menandai pergeseran penting dalam dunia desain hari ini. Beragam istilah (dan non-istilah) lainnya muncul, dan inilah saatnya untuk menyoroti praktik-praktik tersebut.
Dengan semangat itu, Earth Society mengundang dialog lintas disiplin: antara seni dan sains, aktivisme iklim, teknologi dan pengetahuan lokal. Dalam upaya membangun kesadaran dan mengeksplorasi solusi, interaksi menjadi kunci dalam praktik para seniman dan desainer yang terlibat. Karena itu, pameran ini menghadirkan instalasi interaktif, intervensi ruang, dan proyek berbasis komunitas yang melebihi batas-batas dinding hotel, dan berupaya untuk mendefinisikan ulang pameran sebagai medium artistik. Di sini, pameran bukanlah akhir dari proses, melainkan titik awal menuju perubahan yang bermakna.
Edisi ke-15 ICAD ini menjadi penanda perubahan. Calon partisipan dari berbagai latar belakang—seni, desain, sains, ekologi, arsitektur, dan lainnya—memiliki akses untuk mengolah ruang di sini. Tim kurator belajar bersama dengan beragam individu maupun kelompok yang tidak hanya kreatif, tetapi juga menghidupkan kembali makna kolektivitas dan mengeksplorasi keberlanjutan secara menyeluruh. Pada akhirnya, masa depan tidak bisa dibayangkan secara terpisah; ia harus dibangun secara kolektif.
